Black towns
Spanish Florida was the African-American slaves' first Promised Land. The concentration of fugitive slaves in St. Augustine led to the creation of the first black town and fort in the U.S.Jim Crow laws made it difficult or impossible for black citizens to vote, be elected to office, serve on juries, or participate as equals in the economic or social life of their area. To escape segregation and violence in the South, many black citizens migrated to cities in the North and West.That number is now just under 50. When it was founded, the residents built a school and two churches to support the community. Additional Black Towns that currently exist in Oklahoma include: Brooksville, Grayson, Lima, Red Bird, Rentiesville, Summit, Taft, Tatums, Tullahasee and Vernon.
